Cognitive Surplus.
1) What was the general theme or argument of the book?
The general theme of the book Cognitive Surplus was that the world being connected by technology adds a new mass of information that we as creators and innovators can use to our advantage.
2) How did the book, in your opinion, connect with and enhance what you are learning in ENT 3003?
I think that this book was a valuable insight into the idea of entrepreneurship given that the book was based around the assimilation of technology into the culture of innovation and collaborative work efforts. It talks mostly about how being able to generate new information and get in contact with helpful resources easier is a huge edge for modern entrepreneurs.
3) If you had to design an exercise for this class, based on the book you read, what would that exercise involve?
I think you could organize an exercise where students have to identify ten opportunities or advantages that the internet or online resources offer their company. I think that many people ignore things like linked in, Google AdWords, and social media as tools to grow their business and being tasked to identify some of these beneficial tools would be a great advantage.
4) What was your biggest surprise or 'aha' moment when reading the book? In other words, what did you learn that differed most from your expectations?
I think that the biggest surprise for me from the book was that someone was commending the ability to have access to more information than ever. It seems like today all you hear about is people dissing the nonsense you can find across the internet but it was relieving to hear a differing opinion.
This sounds like an interesting book. The activity you cam up with in this assignment is good too. This could create a discussion about all the tools available to everyone and this could lead to some of those who follow through with their businesses to become successful in their endeavor. I would say I have to agree with those that say there is a lot of gibberish on the internet. However, there are lost of helpful tools and information out there too.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very current issue, and we seem to be exposed to it more and more. There is way too much information out there, and definitely is more accessible than ever. But it begs the question, does accessibility and amount of information translate into more knowledge and progress? It seems that like anything in life, one has to focus on the areas that generate personal growth, just as using the internet and web resources for advantageous purposed rather than to absorb irrelevant information.
