Post 9: Testing The Hypothesis Pt. 2

Testing The Hypothesis Pt. 2

*Disclaimer: I've decided to cycle back to the original idea that my blog has been based upon, the dorm decoration company. After doing further market research, there are many companies all striving for the perfect "smart" fire alarm with far more resources than me, leaving me to the realization that it might be too large of a project to compete with. Also I don't know the first thing about the technological aspect of actually building or creating a prototype of some type. I'll provide lots of background info about my revitalized idea in this post but the full idea can be found in one of my earlier posts.

Now that the disclaimer about my quick little switch is out of the way I can get right into the article! In this article, I'll identify the line in which my customer base seizes.  The responses below are some of the boundaries I was able to identify after conducting and analyzing the results of my interview.

Who: Are there certain people or certain businesses that, although they share a lot in common with the others in your opportunity, but still fall outside the boundary? Why?
I believe that my target consumer is a teenager or someone in their low twenties who is either still at University or is moving to their first apartment. The idea behind Dorms by Design is to provide a simple and quick tool to customize, design, and order all the essential decorations without the hassle of moving store to store, trying to match different items blindly, and trying to repackage everything to fit nicely into the car on move in day! I think that a couple competitors for my business that are just slightly outside my target audience. For example, places like Wayfair.com or Houzz.com while they sell home decorations that could be implemented in a dorm room, don't have the young target that I do. Many of the home good retailers are targeting their products for a home or apartment decorating situation but my idea is based on the principle of a user building out a full spread dorm design and then allowing us to mail it to them in as few boxes as possible, thus making the entire shopping and installing process as streamlined and easy as possible!
What: At what point does the need you identified differ from another need? (Is thirst the same as hunger? Or is the desire to appear fashionable the same as the desire to be loved by others?)
My service is designed to eliminate the middle man essentially by allowing users to buy an entire bundle of "essentials" with full customization without having to hunt and pick across stores. All other dorm decoration retailers either provide the decorations as stand alone products or as a set bundle.
Why: Is the underlying cause of the outsiders' need different than people who are inside the boundary?
After analyzing the results of my interviews, it became clear that people still wanted to ability to pick items as if they were stand alone but still be able to bundle them up. While some companies offer something mildly similar, such as maybe the choice between two bedding sets in a bundle, my service will utilize the digital platform and use an AI software to allow people to receive a preview of what their customized dorm is going to look like. The point of the service, while it will allow users to buy individual pieces, is to allow for a fully customized bundle to be built and allow students more time with family, friends or maybe even more time to study!
Inside the boundaryOutside the boundary
Who: Teenagers and StudentsWho is Not: Adults, General Home Decor
What the Need Is:
One stop solution for customized
decoration packages

What the Need Is Not:
General decoration marketplace like TJ Max
or Wayfair.com
Why the Need Exists
People spend too much time
finding stylish sets that meet
customized needs
Alternative Explanations
Home Goods Warehouse or other general dorm
supply company.

  1. I have to say I was a little disappointed about losing the fire alarm idea but I think you made a smart move after doing your research. I think your alternative idea is a very interesting one that has potential. I personally would not use it as I do not live in a campus dorm . However, I think you have done well identifying your market and this idea has a lot of room to grow.

  2. I totally relate to the switch-- I'm already thinking of pivoting again! But I definitely support the change and relate to it. It's much easier to conceptualize business ideas when you can relate to them and have experience with them. I think this is a really solid business idea and I think a market exists. I'm a little confused/curious about the customization aspect-- are you proposing to have AI pick something for the person? Or will they get the chance to alter some selections if they don't like it? I think that might be a good idea! Keep working hard!

  3. I think this idea is probably a better fit for your first potential start up but, I would not completely give up on the fire alarm idea. You can always come back to that. As for this current idea with the dorm decorations, it would be cool to see a feature where you could custom make your own textiles and have them made. Kind of like what Shutterfly does. The last comment I would like to mention is what you said about cutting out the middle man. With the way your current proposal sounds it does not seem like your manufacturing. Which means instead of cutting out the middle man it's more like your trying to replace him with your own service. If you were manufacturing that would be a completely different story though.

Identifying Local Opportunities

Identifying Local Opportunities Problem #1 Electric scooters are on their way back to Miami. Only one commissioner is thrilled https://infoweb.newsbank.com/apps/news/document-view?p=WORLDNEWS&docref=news/16E6CAD12EE75EB8&f=basic What Happened... In Miami, the mayor has passed a bill allowing for the same scooters that infest UF to be street legal in Miami but the bill also allows for the scooters to be driven on the sidewalks. Miami had legalized scooters as a mood of transportation before but removed them from the streets due to high levels of accidents. As high levels of traffic congestion plague the city streets, the mayor believes this will be a slight relief to much of the build up of traffic and even help reduce the city's carbon emissions. The Problem... While allowing scooters may solve minor traffic relief, it has the potential to cause more harm than benefit. Scooter accidents are very common and could result in an increase in traffic injuries and fatalities. Al...

Elevator Pitch #2

I think that the introduction of my idea was superb and a feature of my last video, But what I think that my video lacked was a conclusion that elicited an investment. In this version of my video, I tried to be more dynamic in my voice and in my tone and be more persuasive about the business side of it, not just the idea. I presented more upon the ideas of my target audience and my ultimate goals with the help of more funding.

Figuring Out Buyer Behavior

Sketching out the Beginning of the Buyer Behavior Process 1)  Pick a segment.  For my testing I have decided to test the market segment of students here at the University of Florida. I feel that this segment best represents my ideal customer because they are my ideal customer. I feel that this segment will provide meaningful information that will enhance my ability to market and sell my service/product. 2) N eed awareness.  During my interviews I've sound and concluded that the need does exist. Every person that I talked with agreed with and could relate to the problem and the frustration picking out and shopping for all of their dorm supplies. Everyone that I talked with agreed that there was no popularized solution to this problem and that is a solution or brought about that made things easier yet preserved their ability to express themselves then they would happily purchase. 4)  Move to information search.  When interviewing my prospects, they...
